That same night, July 17, 1973, there was a coup d'etat in Afghanistan, changing it from a monarchy to a republic. Yet when Amir wrote his first short story and read it to Hassan, it was the latter who found the plot hole in the story. Amir was proud of his literacy and lorded it over the unsuspecting, illiterate Hassan. In each generation, the boys could never truly consider themselves friends because of their class differences. Ali and Baba grew up together just like Hassan and Amir. Baba's father took Ali into his house after Ali's parents were killed in an accident. Baba wished Amir was athletic and brave like him instead of cowardly and bookish.Īmir explains how Ali and Baba knew each other. Baba did not subscribe to popular belief, preferring to cast his own opinions about issues. He was a huge and imposing man who was rumored to have wrestled a bear. Hassan would have done anything for Amir his first word was even "Amir." Baba was aloof and did not pay Amir much attention. He was very close to his father, Ali, who was Baba's servant.ĭespite their differences, Amir and Hassan were inseparable. Amir's closest friend, the harelipped Hassan, was also his servant and a Hazara. His father, Baba, was one of the wealthiest and most charitable Pashtun men in Kabul, where they lived in the Wazir Akbar Khan neighborhood. We do not know anything about this event except that it still haunts him and that it involves something he did to Hassan, whom he calls "the harelipped kite runner." Amir takes us back to his childhood, in the final decades of the monarchy in Afghanistan.
Amir, who is thus far a nameless protagonist, tells us that an event in the winter of 1975 changed his life forever. They are joined by several of the Glows who have escaped Hatch's control.The story is narrated from the year 2002. Ostin, Taylor, Wade, and Jack insist that they'll go with Michael. Michael learns that his mother is being held at another of the Elgen compounds and pledges to find her.

Michael is able to free Taylor but Hatch leaves the compound before Michael can get to him. Taylor immediately suspects that Hatch killed Tara's parents in order to gain control of Tara. Taylor discovers that she has a twin sister, Tara, who has lived at the academy almost constantly since she was six and that Hatch became her guardian after the death of Tara's adoptive parents. Some of the children have been with Hatch since they were very young. At the time of Taylor's arrival, he has just had one of the children crash two plane, prompting several airlines to pay millions of dollars for an assurance it won't happen again. Hatch uses the children for elaborate blackmail schemes. They are referred to as "Glows" because they all give off a faint glow. There are thirteen surviving children with powers similar to those of Taylor and Michael. The Elgen Academy is actually just a ruse created by the designer of the magnetic imaging technology, Dr. He plans to go looking for them and convinces Jack and Wade to drive him there. Vey are kidnapped and Michael believes they are being held in Pasadena.
Then Taylor and Michael are invited to attend an elite school, the Elgen Academy in Pasadena. They also find that a medical company named Elegen had been testing a new magnetic imaging technology at that hospital at the time Taylor and Michael were born. They discover that she and Michael were born in the same hospital within days of each other but that the hospital records are missing.
She starts researching her birth with Ostin's help. Taylor has similar powers and they are soon comparing notes. However, another student also sees what happens - a cheerleader named Taylor Ridley. He shocks them but tells his mother he doesn't believe anyone will believe them, even if they do tell on him. The three caused Michael to be in detention just a few days earlier and he's angry when they attack him again. But one day Michael is being beat up by three bullies, Mitchell, Wade, and Jack. Michael's mother wants him to keep his power secret and Michael has done so with the exception of telling his best friend, Ostin Liss, who lives next door. He lives in Idaho with his mother and has a very special power - the ability to shock. Michael Vey is about to celebrate his fifteenth birthday.
